Marco Gavio, soprannominato Apicio, è passato alla storia come il più grande esperto di gastronomia dell'antichità. Alle raffinatezze culinarie egli dedicò la sua vita e anche il suo patrimonio, peraltro ingentissimo, fino a quando, secondo la testimonianza di Seneca, si ridusse in povertà e si suicidò.
